Lindsay Parkhurst Supports Balanced Budget Referendum
Republican House Candidate Lindsay Parkhurst (R – Kankakee) running in the 79th District announced support of a county referendum in Kankakee County on the ballot this November. The referendum, known as the “Balanced Budget” referendum, would send a strong message to Springfield and the Illinois Attorney General to abide by and enforce the balanced budget requirement in the Illinois Constitution.
“The Illinois Constitution requires budgets passed by the General Assembly to be balanced budgets. In my two years in Springfield, there has not been a single balanced budget voted on,” Rep. Parkhurst said.
According to the Illinois Comptroller, Illinois has not had a balanced budget since 2001 though the Illinois Constitution requires as such. This leaves Illinois under its 17th year without a balanced budget.
“Politicians have been able to get away with unbalanced budgets for decades because no one has enforced the law. The Attorney General has the duty to enforce the Constitution and laws of Illinois and should enforce the balanced budget requirement when politicians feel they can violate the law,” Rep. Parkhurst continued.
The referendum will be on the general election ballot which will read “Should the Illinois Attorney General enforce the balanced budget requirement placed upon the Illinois General Assembly by the Illinois Constitution?” Voters will be able to vote YES or No. The election will take place on Nov. 6 and early voting began on Sept. 27.
